MAPS 2nd Annual Spring Into Your Health Student Health Fair

On March 25, 2014, MAPS hosted its 2nd Annual student health fair to bring health information and services to the Barry student body.  During the fair, students had the opportunity to receive chiropractic screenings, CPR certification training, information on healthcare plans, and health and wellness information.  Health fair vendors included One Beat CPR, Cloverleaf Chiropractic, Humana and The Icla Da Silva Foundation representatives of which signed up students for the Be The MatchTM bone marrow registry. We look forward to doing it again next year! MAPS would like to thank all the health professionals, representatives from the Student Organization Council and the students for making this event possible!

MAPS Members Make a Difference During Alternative Spring Break

During spring break 2014, members of MAPS participated in the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip organized by Campus Ministries.  In fact, five of the seven Barry students who participated this year were MAPS members.  This year's trip to Kingston, Jamaica was a very humbling experience for our members.

The week kicked off with a Sunday Family Day service, a lively celebration of life through song and scripture. Following the service, ASB participants visited the homebound parishioners - seniors, the sick, blind and amputees. They spent time talking with them, offering to help with household chores but the parishioners were content and grateful for their presence and instead opted to sing with and pray for the students.  Students also had the opportunity to visit the neighborhood clinic and learn about the medical needs of the community.  They also participated in the Meals on Wheels program, helping to prepare the meals, pack and distribute them in the neighborhood.

MAPS members who participated in this year’s ASB trip all agree that their week was extraordinary on many levels. “I really feel an experience like this should be required at some point during every student's undergraduate education.” said junior biology major and MAPS Student National Medical Association liaison Alejandro Tobón, for whom this was his second ASB trip. “The amount of information you learn about culture, people, history, food, politics, education, health, and about yourself is much more valuable than what you can obtain from simply reading a book. The experience brings out the best in you, your true character and beauty. It invigorates you and makes you a more conscious global citizen.”

MAPS Raises Awareness of the Need for Bone Marrow Donors

With the critical need for donors for the 10 million individuals awaiting a bone marrow transplant, members of MAPS volunteered on behalf of the Icla Da Silva Foundation, performing simultaneous bone marrow registry drives in Thompson Hall and Landon atrium on February 27 signing individuals up for the Be The MatchTM bone marrow registry.  MAPS would like to thank all who signed up to make a difference in the lives of individuals awaiting identification of a compatible bone marrow donor. The need is great because family members are compatible matches only 25% of the time

In partnership with the La Icla Silva Foundation, MAPS will be sponsoring a second bone marrow registry drive on Tuesday, February 25th, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  As part of the 3rd annual “Spring into Your Health,” student health fair at Landon Atrium.  We are hoping to find a match for the vast majority of patients waiting for a match most of which- more than 70%-are children.
