Stephen Symes, MD


The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) is pleased to present Stephen Symes, MD, as part of the March Madness: Medical School Application Preparation series.

Dr. Symes is Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Program Director for the Internal Medicine training program at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Assistant Dean for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He received his medical training at Howard University and has been at the University of Miami since 1992.
His clinical activities are focused on the care of patients HIV and AIDS, and training students, physicians and other health care workers on the needs of these patients. He is also passionate about tackling the issue of health care disparities both locally and internationally, with emphasis on training young physicians to pursue this as a future career.
This event is part of the month-long series of March Madness: Medical School Application Preparation workshops sponsored by MAPS. All are welcome.

Upcoming Opportunities!!

This week there are 3 opportunities to have a meaningful summer and 1 opportunity to earn scholarship money!!

  1. Summer undergraduate research experience at the University of Massachusetts Medical, Worcester. Go to www.umassmed.edu/summer for more info on how specific requirements and how to apply. The program dates are May 27, 2012 through August 3, 2012. Application deadline is March 16, 2012.  In addition to placement in a research lab, this highly structured program provide housing and travel expenses, and a generous stipend.

  3.  UNCF Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) will accept applications for the US Army Institute for Surgical Research (USAISR) Summer Internship Program. Deadline for this application is March 16, 2012. The goal of the project is to provide undergraduate students exposure to both laboratory and clinical trauma research.  If you wish for your application to be considered for the USAISR Summer Internship Program, please go to the UNCFSP website, http://www.uncfsp.org/ , login, apply, and submit. 
  4. Students are invited to submit an original essay on the topic below for a chance to win $1,500 and a brand new iPad 2. the deadline for this submission is March 12, 2012. Essay topic:  Different elements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) will have broad reaching implications for many sectors of the health system, including insurance coverage, public programs, costs, quality of care, technology, public health, and health care workforce. Describe an element of the ACA that you feel will have a major impact on either health or health care (positive or negative).
