Barry University's 7th Annual STEM Symposium

 

 On Wednesday, April 1st, Barry University held its 7th annual STEM Symposium.  During the symposium, students from Barry and St. Thomas presented their research that included fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, pyschology, and mathematics.  Additionally, there was a lecture by NASA's Russell Romanella entitled "NASA-Exploration for Our Future".

 

 

 

 

My Medical School Application Workshop

 

 

On April 10th, MAPS hosted the "My Medical School Application" Workshop.  This workshop provided students with a summary on how to properly prepare applications for Allopathic (M.D.) professional school programs. Topics covered included FAP, MCAT, letters of recommendations, MSAR, primary and secondary application sections. Additionally, critical tips for mastering the interview process were provided.

On Tuesday, April 7th, Barry Biology, MAPS and AMSA alum Alec Davila ('13) shared insights into the medical school experience and tips on successfully making the transition from undergraduate studies. He is a 2nd-year medical student at Georgia Regents University and has recently been accepted into their MD/PhD program.  We would like to thank Alec for returning to Barry to share his experiences!

The International Medical School Experience



On Monday, April 27th, Dr. Mariarita Salvitti (Pediatric Urology Fellow; Miami Children's Hospital), an Italian trained physician discussed her day-to-day activities as a physician and her experience trying to find a job in the United States following medical training oversees.  She explained the differences between studying medicine in Italy rather than in America and presented a video of a pediatric surgery that she participated in.  MAPS would like to thank Dr. Salvitti for speaking at Barry University!

Diversity Dialogues: A Look Into Haitian Culture and Healthcare



On Friday, April 24th, MAPS hosted "Diversity Dialogues: A Look Into Haitian Culture and Healthcare".  During this event, MAPS Secretary Kenny Noel explored the effect cultural influences may have on one's healthcare attitudes in terms of patient-physician relationships and treatment decisions.  MAPS would like to thank Kenny for speaking and to everyone who attended!
